In April 2017 Charlie McKenzie, Regional Development Manager for Bouygues Energies & Services Contracting UK, made history by becoming the first ever president of ASHRAE’s new Scottish Section. Almost a year later, we explore Charlie’s major achievements during his time as President.
We were delighted in 2017 when Charlie McKenzie was selected as the first president of the new Scotland Section for ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers). The inauguration ceremony took place on 7th April and was held at the Royal College Building of Strathclyde University, in Glasgow. Quite the momentous occasion, the event was attended by ASHRAE members and special guests, including Tom Lawrence – a distinguished ASHRAE lecturer from the University of Georgia; Stephen Gill – President of the Institute of Refrigeration and ASHRAE UK Midlands; Tim Wentz – Global ASHRAE President at the time; and Simone Hart Sibbald – Chairperson of BESA Scotland and Vice Chair of the National Association of Duct Cleaners UK.
Speaking of his appointment within one of the largest professional organisations in the world, Charlie said:
“Communication and collaboration shall be a key factor for growing the Section and I will listen to all members’ and stakeholder’s viewpoints to ensure success! I want to get everyone enthusiastic about being involved – there are sure to be challenges along the way, and the only thing you can count on is change, but I want to get the industry motivated to push forward over the next year.”
Pushing forward in 2018:
Now, almost a year on, we catch up with Charlie to find out what he’s been up to since April 2017 and if he’s got anything more to squeeze into his Presidency before his tenure comes to an end in July this year…
“The Section under my tenure has increased membership, in particular with young engineers and through my collaboration strategy with other professional institutions such as CIBSE, BESA, IET, etc.
I co-ordinated a successful Distinguished Lecturer event in Glasgow on the 16th March last year, with Dennis Knight from South Carolina presenting on BIM. This event was undertaken in collaboration with CIBSE Scotland.
I was also able to entice the new ASHRAE Global President, Bjarne Olesen, to open the new Bouygues Energies & Services Scotland Office on the 8th October and I am currently co-ordinating another Distinguished Lecturer event with guest speaker Julian De Bullet, for the 24th May this year.
This is all alongside the day-to-day running of the ASHRAE Scotland Section and my CIBSE Scotland Committee commitments, which keep me busy in my spare time!!”
